Michael Li

Hepatologist and gastroenterologist

Dr. Michael Li is a transplant hepatologist and gastroenterologist who cares for patients with cirrhosis (scarring of the liver that impairs its function), autoimmune liver diseases and liver cancer.

Li's research focuses on the relationship between the immune system and liver disease. He studies autoimmune diseases, such as primary sclerosing cholangitis, as well immunotherapy (treatments that fight disease using the patient's immune system) for liver cancer. He seeks to perform research that can be translated into a better understanding of how to treat immune-mediated liver diseases.

Li earned his medical degree at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and completed a residency in internal medicine at the Mount Sinai Hospital. He completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and a fellowship in transplant hepatology at UCSF. He also has a master of public health degree from the T.H. Chan Harvard School of Public Health. He is a member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, American Gastroenterological Association and American College of Gastroenterology.

Li was a nationally ranked junior tennis player, though his skills have eroded since entering medicine. Having grown up in Massachusetts rooting for Boston-based athletic teams, he is invested in ensuring that his daughter develops the appropriate sports allegiances.

    Dr. Li was very helpful in treatment and in answering my questions. I cold not feel more fortunate than in working with Dr. Li on my issue. I left optimistic and encouraged and that's not easy to do from the Liver Clinic. I also want to mention Jessica for her constant care an excellent communication.

    Dr. Li Was very helpful and kind any questions I had he explained thoroughly. I felt really comfortable talking to him and after our Office visit was over I was extremely satisfied with the way it had gone. Not knowing Dr. Li I was kind of anxious, but again I felt very good after our meeting was over.

    Excellent visit with Dr. Li. I never doubted his concern for my health and wellbeing. Because of the state of my current health issue I will be seeing Dr Li for the rest of my life. He was personable and a great listener. This visit was to map out our plan for my care for F4 cirrhosis in the coming years. I had a full page of questions that I brought with me and he patiently answered each one. The future of my health journey is inevitable, but believe it or not, I left this visit feeling great with the knowledge that I was in the best hands possible.
